Sod Installation In Laurentian Hills, Kitchener

A worn front lawn in Laurentian Hills, south-west Kitchener, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over two days, 29 and 30 July 2026, and photographed by our crew from the morning of 29 July to the first watering.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a front lawn at a two-storey home in Laurentian Hills, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Laurentian Hills sod installation page.

🍂

Before

What we saw: Thin, patchy grass across the front lawn, with bare ground under the mature spruce by the driveway and along the sidewalk edge. The grass had dried out and thinned.

If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frames 1 and 2 in the gallery below show this lawn on the morning of 29 July 2026.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded flush to the driveway and walkway, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front lawn.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On 29 July the old turf was cut out and hauled away, and fresh topsoil was raked and graded flush with the driveway and walkway by evening.

The result: On the morning of 30 July the rolls went down along the driveway side first, then across the front lawn and tight to the sidewalk edge. The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by late morning.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Laurentian Hills Lawn

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: The old lawn had thinned to bare ground under the spruce and along the sidewalk, and bare ground stays bare until something fills it.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. The spots that had gone bare here were the edges beside the driveway and the sidewalk, and a grass that closes its own gaps is the right one for those edges.

☀️

Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine

The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.

Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinkler was running here half an hour after the last roll went down.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Patchy, drought-thinned front lawn at a two-storey home in Laurentian Hills, Kitchener, before sod replacement

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job

What we assessed: thin, patchy grass, with bare ground under the mature spruce by the driveway and along the sidewalk edge. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the hardscape, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf

On 29 July the old turf came out across the whole front lawn. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass and its thatch leave the property instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Driveway and Walkway

Fresh topsoil was raked and graded flush with the driveway and the walkway on the evening of 29 July, so the new sod would sit level with the hardscape instead of proud of it or sunk below it.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

On the morning of 30 July the first rolls went down along the driveway side. By mid-morning the front lawn was covered and the crew was at the sidewalk edge under the spruce, fitting each roll tight to the sidewalk with a wheelbarrow of rolls behind them. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by late morning on 30 July. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Nine Frames From the Job

Nine photographs taken by the crew over two days, in the order they were taken: the worn lawn on the morning of 29 July, the graded topsoil that evening, and the new Kentucky bluegrass sod going down and being watered in on 30 July.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
