Sod Installation In Galt, Cambridge
An overgrown front yard in Galt, Cambridge, cleared down to bare soil, graded and laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod on 20 August 2026, photographed by our crew from the weeds at mid-morning to the sprinkler out on the new lawn that evening.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a front yard between the driveway and the sidewalk at a red-brick bungalow with a white iron porch railing in Galt, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Galt sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Not a thin lawn but no lawn at all. The raised bed between the driveway and the sidewalk had gone over to waist-high weeds and a shrub grown wild, right up to the porch, with weeds spilling over the concrete curb onto the sidewalk and coming through the cracks along the driveway.
If this looks like your lawn: For this yard the fix was a full clear-out down to bare soil rather than cutting the growth back. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard at mid-morning on 20 August 2026, before the crew started.

The Quote
The estimate covered: Clearing the whole front yard down to bare soil and hauling away the brush, grading the ground level and flush with the concrete curb along the driveway and the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole yard.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On the morning of 20 August a compact track loader cleared the weeds and the shrub, the brush was piled for hauling and a boulder came out of the ground with it; by early afternoon the yard was bare soil from the driveway curb to the sidewalk, and by mid-afternoon the crew had it raked and graded level.
The result: By evening the Kentucky bluegrass rolls were down across the whole front yard, fitted along the concrete curb by the driveway and to the sidewalk edge, with the hose and a sprinkler laid out on the new sod by the porch.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Galt Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Cambridge sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Cambridge lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring. A lawn laid in the second half of August, like this one, gets the cooler weeks of late summer and fall to root in before its first winter.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: This yard had been without a lawn for long enough that weeds and a shrub had taken it over, and open ground with nothing growing in it does not stay empty for long.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. A dense, knitted turf is also the best answer to the weeds that had taken this yard over, because it leaves them little bare ground to seed into.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: This yard sits between the driveway and the sidewalk with no tree over it, in open sun from late morning to the low evening light of the last frames, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day. With daily watering for the first two weeks or so it roots into the soil in two to three weeks, which is why the hose and a sprinkler were already laid out on the sod when the last frames were taken that evening.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step
Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a front yard that had gone over to waist-high weeds and a shrub grown wild between the driveway and the sidewalk, with nothing left of a lawn under it. Rather than cut it back, the estimate covered a full clear-out down to bare soil, the ground graded level to the driveway curb and the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Clear Out and Haul Away the Overgrowth
There was no old turf to cut out here: the whole bed was weeds and shrub. Before noon on 20 August a compact track loader had it cut and pulled, the brush was piled on the soil and the driveway for hauling, and a boulder came out of the ground with it, lying beside the loader in frame 2 and gone by the early-afternoon frame. Clearing the bed to bare soil rather than mowing it down means the shrub and the weeds leave the property instead of coming back up through the new sod.
Grade the Soil Level to the Driveway Curb and the Sidewalk
By early afternoon the yard was bare soil from the concrete curb along the driveway to the sidewalk, with the loader parked on it. By mid-afternoon the crew was over it with rakes and a wheelbarrow, grading the surface level and flush with the curb and the sidewalk so the new sod would sit level with the concrete instead of proud of it or sunk below it.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The frames jump from the graded soil in mid-afternoon to the laid lawn in the evening, so no photo caught the rolls going down. What the evening frames show is the whole yard covered, each roll fitted along the concrete curb by the driveway and cut to the sidewalk edge, with the seams still visible in the low sun. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn.
Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
By the last frames on the evening of 20 August the hose and a sprinkler were laid out on the new sod by the porch. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
