Sod Installation In Lakeshore Village, Waterloo
A back yard that came to us as bare, packed ground under a big maple in Lakeshore Village, Waterloo, laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod on 12 June 2026 and photographed by our crew from the first rolls just before noon to the sprinkler running by mid-afternoon.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a back yard under a large purple-leaved maple at a brick home in Lakeshore Village, Waterloo, which reached the camera as bare ground with the first row of sod going down, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: By the first frame, just before noon on 12 June 2026, the back yard was bare, packed, pale ground from the air-conditioner pad almost to the far fence under a large purple-leaved maple, with the first row of sod already laid along the chain-link fence at the far end. Established grass remains only in a strip along the right-hand side; the left is a planting bed and the air-conditioner pad. The old lawn itself is not in the photo record: the frames pick up at bare ground.
If this looks like your lawn: A back yard that is bare, packed ground under a big tree is a whole-lawn job rather than a patch. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows this yard just before noon on 12 June 2026, bare from the house to the maple with the first row of sod down at the far fence.

The Quote
The estimate covered: The whole back yard laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod: from the air-conditioner pad at the house wall to the chain-link fence at the far end, around the trunk of the maple, and fitted to the strip of existing grass along the right-hand side and to the planting bed on the left.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 12 June 2026 the crew worked from the far end of the yard toward the house: by early afternoon the sod was down around the maple, along the chain-link fence and up to the back wood fence behind the maple, with the near half still bare ground and the wheelbarrow standing on it.
The result: By mid-afternoon the whole back yard was laid, the rolls fitted to the strip of existing grass on the right, to the planting bed on the left and up to the air-conditioner pad, and a sprinkler was running on the new lawn in front of the maple.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Lakeshore Village Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: A lawn laid in mid-June gets one growing season to root before its first Waterloo winter, then months of frozen ground and freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring, and a June install gives it the whole summer and autumn to establish first.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: This lawn has more edges than most: the new sod wraps around the trunk of the maple, runs up to the chain-link and wood fences, and meets the strip of existing grass along the right-hand side and the planting bed on the left, and every one of those joins is a seam.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. The seam lines that show around the maple in the early-afternoon frames are exactly the kind of join it closes over as it establishes.
☀️
Roots In Fast With Daily Watering
The challenge: New sod laid in mid-June is only as good as its first two weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil, and the near half of this yard sits in full sun at midday while the far half is in the shade of the maple.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinkler was already running on the new lawn in the last frame, taken that afternoon.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a back yard in Lakeshore Village that came to us as bare, packed ground under a large purple-leaved maple, with existing grass left only in a strip along the right-hand side. The estimate covered the whole back yard laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod, fitted around the maple, to the strip of grass on the right and to the planting bed and air-conditioner pad on the left.
Clear the Old Lawn Down to Bare Ground
The frames do not show this stage. The first photograph, taken just before noon on 12 June, already shows bare ground from the air-conditioner pad almost to the far fence, with a clean edge against the strip of grass along the right-hand side and the first row of sod already down at the chain-link fence; the photo record picks up at the cleared ground.

Grade the Ground Level Before the First Roll
The frames do not show grading either. Frame 1 shows the ground bare, firm and broadly level from the house to the far fence, packed and gravelly with a wheel track across it and the trunk of the maple standing clear, and the first row of sod going straight onto that surface at the far end. Frames 2 and 3 show the rest of the rolls laid onto the same ground.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The crew worked from the far fence toward the house. By early afternoon on 12 June the sod was down around the maple, along the chain-link fence and up to the back fence behind the maple while the near half was still bare, the wheelbarrow standing on it, and by mid-afternoon the rolls reached the air-conditioner pad, the planting bed on the left and the strip of grass on the right. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
A sprinkler was running on the new lawn in front of the maple by mid-afternoon on 12 June, the hose run out from the house wall past the air conditioner. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
