Sod Installation On Lexington Crescent, Waterloo
A newly built home on Lexington Crescent, Waterloo, taken from bare, compacted ground to farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass front and back over two days, 17 and 18 August 2026, and photographed by our crew through to a follow-up visit nine days later.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the front and back yards of a newly built modern two-storey home on Lexington Crescent, Waterloo, which came to us as bare ground, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: No lawn at all. The yard came to us as bare, compacted ground around a newly built home: pale, dry soil across the back, rough ground strewn with branches and building debris at the far end of the back yard, and a front yard that was bare earth up to the grass strip at the road.
If this looks like your lawn: There was no old turf to tear out here, so the job was clearing, grading and laying rather than patching. Frames 1 and 2 in the gallery below show the back yard on 17 August 2026, before any topsoil went down.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Clearing the rough ground of debris, fresh topsoil spread and graded across the back yard, the front yard graded ready for sod, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod laid front and back and along the side of the house.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 17 August the crew cleared the rough ground and had fresh topsoil graded across the back yard by the evening. The sod was delivered early on 18 August, the first section was down along the back of the house by mid-morning, and the crew moved on to the front lawn in the afternoon.
The result: Both lawns were laid by the evening of 18 August, with sprinklers already running on the front. When the crew came back nine days later, on 27 August, the back lawn had filled in and the sprinklers were running, and a strip beside the driveway was sodded that day.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Lexington Crescent Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: A brand-new lawn laid in the second half of August has only a few months to root before a Waterloo winter, and then faces months of frozen ground and freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it keeps growing through the cool weeks of autumn, comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: The sod for this job arrived as pallets of rolls, and every seam between two rolls is a place where a new lawn can dry out or open up, especially on ground that was bare and compacted the day before.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. The seam lines that show in the frames from the evening of 18 August are far less visible in the frames from nine days later.
☀️
Roots In Fast With Daily Watering
The challenge: New sod laid in the heat of August is only as good as its first two weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil, and the front lawn here is an open lawn beside a wide concrete driveway.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinklers were running on the front lawn by the evening of 18 August and still running on the back lawn on 27 August.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step
Assess the Ground and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a newly built home with no lawn at all, bare, compacted ground across the back and the front and rough, debris-strewn ground at the far end of the back yard. The estimate covered clearing, fresh topsoil graded across the back yard, the front graded ready for sod, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod front and back.
Clear the Ground, With No Old Turf to Cut Out
There was no old lawn to strip and haul away on this job. On the afternoon of 17 August the crew cleared branches and building debris from the rough ground in the back yard and worked it over by hand, as the second frame shows, so the topsoil that followed would sit on a clean base.
Grade Fresh Topsoil Across the Back Yard
Fresh topsoil was spread and graded across the back yard through the afternoon of 17 August and was graded flush with the patio and walkway by that evening and raked out the next morning. The front yard was already graded when the sod was delivered early on 18 August.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Pallets were set out across both yards first thing on 18 August. The first section went down along the back of the house by mid-morning, the crew fitted rolls tight to the patio, the walkway and the tree line, and by the afternoon they had moved to the front lawn. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn.
Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
Sprinklers were running on the front lawn as the last frames were taken on the evening of 18 August. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Nine days later the sprinklers were still running on the back lawn, and every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
