Backyard Sod Installation In Galt, Cambridge

A weedy back yard lawn behind a home in Galt, Cambridge, looked at on 18 August 2026 and replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in one morning on 28 August, photographed by our crew from the first look to the finished lawn.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a back yard edged with river rock behind a deck and gazebo at a home in Galt, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Galt sod installation page.

🍂

Before

What we saw: A weedy, patchy back yard lawn between a river-rock border and the fence, thin across the middle and overtaken by clover and weeds toward the deck. The garden beds along the fence were kept; the lawn between them had gone.

If this looks like your lawn: For this yard, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard on our first visit on the evening of 18 August 2026.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded from the deck to the back fence and to the river-rock border, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole back yard.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On the morning of 28 August the crew ran the sod cutter across the old lawn from eight o’clock and had the turf off and the yard graded with fresh topsoil by late morning.

The result: By half past twelve on 28 August the new sod was down from the deck to the fence and fitted to the river-rock border, with the hose out on the lawn.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Galt Back Yard

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Cambridge sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Cambridge lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: A back yard with garden beds and a river-rock border has a lot of edge, and thin turf lets weeds in along every one of them.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. A dense bluegrass lawn is also the best defence against the clover and weeds that had moved into the old one.

☀️

Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees

The challenge: A tall tree next door throws shade across part of this yard in the afternoon.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day, and a yard open to the south like this one gets that.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Weedy, patchy back yard lawn between a river-rock border and the fence at a home in Galt, Cambridge, before sod

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job

What we assessed on 18 August: a weedy, patchy back yard lawn between the river-rock border and the fence, thin across the middle. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the border, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf

From eight on the morning of 28 August the crew ran the sod cutter across the old lawn and barrowed the turf out past the deck. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the weeds, the tired grass and their thatch leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil From the Deck to the Fence

By late morning fresh topsoil had been spread and graded across the yard, level from the deck steps to the back fence and out to the river-rock border, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old bumps and hollows.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

The rolls went down before noon on 28 August, from the deck steps across to the fence, cut in around the garden beds and fitted tight to the river-rock border on both sides.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

The hose was out on the new lawn by half past twelve on 28 August. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Six Frames From the Job

Six photographs taken by the crew, in the order they were taken: the weedy lawn on our first visit on 18 August, then the sod cutter, the stripped ground, the fresh topsoil graded and the new Kentucky bluegrass sod laid by half past twelve, all on the morning of 28 August.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
