Sod Installation On Brisbane Drive, Kitchener
The side and back yard of a two-storey brick home on Brisbane Drive, Kitchener, taken from bare ground to farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over three days, 30 May to 1 June 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first look to the sprinkler.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the side and back yard of a two-storey brick home on Brisbane Drive, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Bare, packed ground with a scatter of weeds along the side of the house and across the back yard to the shed, and a strip of thin grass under the deck. There was no lawn to speak of behind the house.
If this looks like your lawn: A yard that comes to us as bare ground is a whole-lawn job: fresh topsoil and sod, not a patch. Frames 1 and 2 in the gallery below show the yard on the morning of 30 May 2026.

The Quote
The estimate covered: Fresh topsoil spread and graded across the side and back yard and under the deck, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod laid from the front strip by the driveway right through to the shed.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 30 May fresh topsoil was spread and graded across the side and back yard by late afternoon. On the morning of 1 June the sod arrived on a pallet at the curb.
The result: Through 1 June the rolls went down along the side of the house, across the back yard to the shed and under the deck stairs, and the front strip by the driveway had the sprinkler running by late afternoon.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Brisbane Drive Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A narrow side yard between two houses takes foot traffic on the same strip every day, and bare ground stays bare.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. On the side strip here that self-repair is what keeps a worn path from opening up again.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinkler was running on the front strip before the crew left on 1 June.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed on 30 May: bare, packed ground with weeds along the side of the house and across the back yard, and a thin strip of grass under the deck. The estimate covered fresh topsoil graded across the whole yard and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the front strip to the shed.
Clear the Old Ground
There was no old lawn to cut out here: the yard came to us as bare ground. The weeds and the thin grass under the deck were cleared so the topsoil would sit on clean ground, and the frames pick up at the graded topsoil that afternoon.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Deck and the Shed
Fresh topsoil was spread and graded across the side and back yard on the afternoon of 30 May, flush with the gravel pad by the deck and out to the shed, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old bumps and hollows.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The sod arrived on the morning of 1 June and went down through the day: the narrow side yard between the two brick houses first, then the back yard to the shed and under the deck stairs, each roll fitted tight to the gravel and the foundation.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by late afternoon on 1 June, starting with the front strip by the driveway. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
