Sod Installation In Cherry Hill, Kitchener
The side lawn of a two-storey brick building in Cherry Hill, Kitchener, taken from bare, weedy ground to established Kentucky bluegrass sod across four visits between 21 July and 10 August 2026, and photographed by our crew at every stage.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the side lawn of a two-storey brick building with its own parking lot in Cherry Hill, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Bare, compacted ground with weeds along the side of a two-storey brick building, from the sidewalk to the wall, with a thin fringe of grass at the edges. This was ground that had been worn down over years, not a lawn that had died.
If this looks like your lawn: Ground like this needs machine grading and fresh topsoil before any sod goes near it. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the strip on our first visit on 21 July 2026, and frame 2 the same strip on the morning of 1 August.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Stripping the weedy surface by machine, a delivery of fresh topsoil spread and graded along the building and out to the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole side lawn.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 1 August the skid steer stripped and graded the ground, a load of topsoil was delivered to the curb by mid-afternoon and spread and graded along the building by early evening.
The result: On 4 August the sod went down across the graded strip and along the building. On 10 August the sprinkler was running and the lawn had knitted into one surface.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Cherry Hill Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A strip beside a building and a sidewalk takes foot traffic along the same line every day, which is how this ground was worn bare.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Six days after laying, the seams in frame 11 had already closed.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the crew came back on 10 August to check the watering rather than leaving it to chance.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Ground and Quote the Job
What we assessed on 21 July: bare, compacted, weedy ground along the side of the building, worn down to the subsoil in places. The estimate covered machine stripping and grading, a load of fresh topsoil, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole strip.
Strip the Old Surface by Machine
On 1 August the skid steer stripped the weedy surface along the building and pushed the spoil off, leaving clean subsoil. On ground this compacted a sod cutter has nothing to cut, so the machine does the clearing.

Deliver and Grade Fresh Topsoil
A dump truck delivered topsoil to the curb on the afternoon of 1 August. The skid steer spread it along the building and the crew graded it out to the sidewalk by early evening, so the sod would sit on a deep, even bed rather than the hard ground underneath.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
On 4 August the rolls went down across the graded strip, tight to the building wall and the sidewalk, and around the trees at the far end. By evening the whole side lawn was laid.

Water In and Check Back
On 10 August, six days after laying, the sprinkler was running and the seams had closed into one lawn. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
