Sod Installation On Columbia Street West, Waterloo
The side yard of a brick two-storey on Columbia Street West, Waterloo, taken from rough, bare ground to farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in one day, 4 September 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first frame to the finished lawn.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the side yard of a brick two-storey on Columbia Street West, between the building and a line of trees, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Rough, bare ground along the side of the building with mounds of excavated soil, scattered debris and weeds, and a concrete pad at the far end. There was no lawn here to replace; the ground had to be made first.
If this looks like your lawn: A yard that comes to us as rough ground is a grading job before it is a sod job. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard just before noon on 4 September 2026.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Clearing the debris and knocking down the soil mounds, the ground graded level along the building and out to the trees, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole side yard.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: Before noon on 4 September the crew cleared the debris and worked the mounds down, and the yard was graded level along the building by early afternoon.
The result: By a quarter to five that afternoon the rolls were down along the wall, across the yard to the trees and along the concrete walk, and the hose was out on the new lawn.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Columbia Street West Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Waterloo lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A side yard along a building takes foot traffic on one line, and a lawn made from bare ground has no old roots to fall back on.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. On new ground like this, that is how one afternoon of rolls becomes a single lawn.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A line of tall trees shades the far side of this yard for part of the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day, and the open side along the building gets full sun.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Ground and Quote the Job
What we assessed: rough, bare ground with soil mounds and debris along the side of the building, and no lawn to speak of. The estimate covered clearing and grading the yard level, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the building wall to the trees.
Clear the Debris and Old Ground
There was no old turf to cut out here. On the morning of 4 September the crew cleared the debris and weeds and worked the mounds of soil down so the yard could be graded, and the frames pick up at the cleared ground just after noon.

Grade the Yard Level Along the Building
The ground was raked and graded level along the building, out to the trees and down to the concrete pad and walk by early afternoon on 4 September, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the mounds and hollows it came with.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The rolls went down through the afternoon of 4 September, along the building wall first, then across the yard to the tree line and tight to the concrete walk and the pad.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The hose was out on the new lawn by a quarter to five on 4 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the owner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Seven Frames From the Job
Seven photographs taken by the crew in one day, in the order they were taken: the rough ground before noon on 4 September, the cleared and graded yard, and the new Kentucky bluegrass sod laid along the building, across to the trees and along the walk by late afternoon.
