Sod Installation On Stanley Drive, Waterloo

A front lawn above a natural-stone retaining wall on Stanley Drive, Waterloo, graded and laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over three days, 24 to 26 June 2026, and photographed by our crew from the graded bed to the sprinkler.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a front lawn set above a natural-stone retaining wall, with a young tree and a hedge, on Stanley Drive, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.

🍂

Before

What we saw: Bare soil across a raised front bed above a stone retaining wall, with a young tree at one end and the old surface already stripped when the frames begin. The wall and the hedge were staying; everything between them was starting from soil.

If this looks like your lawn: The photo record picks up at the graded ground: the old lawn was already off when the camera came out. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the bed on the afternoon of 24 June 2026.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: Fresh topsoil raked and graded across the raised bed above the retaining wall and around the tree, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front lawn down to the driveway.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On 24 June the crew raked and graded the topsoil across the bed above the wall through the afternoon and into the evening, working it level around the young tree.

The result: On 26 June the sod arrived on the trailer with a load of topsoil in the morning, the rolls went down across the bed and along the driveway, and the sprinkler was running on the new lawn by late afternoon.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Stanley Drive Lawn

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Waterloo lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: A raised bed above a retaining wall drains fast and dries at the edge, and a lawn that cannot close its own gaps thins out along the wall first.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Above a wall like this one that self-repair is what keeps the edge green.

☀️

Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine

The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.

Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, and a bed that drains as fast as this one needs that daily watering more than most.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Bare soil graded around a young tree above a natural-stone retaining wall on Stanley Drive, Waterloo

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job

What we assessed: a raised front bed above a stone retaining wall, stripped to bare soil, with a young tree and a hedge to work around. The estimate covered fresh topsoil graded across the bed and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the wall to the driveway.

Clear the Old Surface

The old lawn was already off when the frames begin on 24 June, so the record starts at bare soil. What the crew cleared was the loose spoil and stones left on the bed, so the topsoil would sit on clean ground.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Above the Wall

Through the afternoon and evening of 24 June the crew raked and graded the topsoil across the bed, level with the top of the stone wall and around the base of the young tree, so the new sod would sit even on a bed that drops away to the street.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

On the morning of 26 June the sod arrived on the trailer with more topsoil. The rolls went down across the bed above the wall and along the driveway, fitted to the hedge, the tree and the stone edge.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by late afternoon on 26 June. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
