Sod Installation In Old University, Guelph
A weedy, sloping back yard behind a home in Old University, Guelph, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over two days, 8 and 9 July 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first morning to the finished lawn.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region and beyond we have photographed: a long, fenced back yard with a soccer net at the far end, behind a home in Old University, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A sloping back yard gone to weeds and thin grass between the fences, bare in the worn patches and rough underfoot from the garden at the house end down to the soccer net. It was the whole yard that needed replacing, not a corner.
If this looks like your lawn: For this yard, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard just before eight on the morning of 8 July 2026.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old weeds and turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil spread and graded down the length of the yard between the fences, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the house end to the soccer net.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 8 July the crew stripped the yard by half past eight, worked the ground over through the afternoon and had fresh topsoil graded down the slope by half past four.
The result: On the morning of 9 July the rolls went down from the far end back toward the house, and the yard was laid, edged and watered by a quarter to one.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Old University Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Guelph sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Guelph lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A back yard with a soccer net at one end takes hard wear in the same places every week, and thin grass had already lost that fight here.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. In front of a goal, that self-repair is what keeps a worn patch from becoming bare ground again.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: Tall trees along both fences throw moving shade across this yard for part of the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day, and a long open yard like this one gets that down the middle.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a sloping back yard gone to weeds and thin grass between the fences, bare in the worn patches. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded down the length of the yard, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod to the soccer net.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
On the morning of 8 July the crew stripped the old weeds and turf from the whole yard and barrowed the spoil off. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the weeds, the tired grass and their roots leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Down the Slope
Through the afternoon of 8 July the ground was worked over and fresh topsoil spread and graded down the slope between the fences, even from the garden at the house end to the soccer net, so the new sod would sit on a smooth bed instead of the old bumps and hollows.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
On the morning of 9 July the crew laid the rolls from the far end back toward the house, two wheelbarrows feeding the line, and fitted them tight to both fences and around the garden bed at the house end.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The hose was out on the new lawn by half past twelve on 9 July. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Eight Frames From the Job
Eight photographs taken by the crew over two days, in the order they were taken: the weedy yard before eight on 8 July, the stripped ground and the topsoil graded down the slope that day, the crew laying rolls on the morning of 9 July, and the finished Kentucky bluegrass lawn by a quarter to one.
