Sod Installation In Forest Hills, Kitchener
A thin, weedy front lawn at a brick-and-siding home in Forest Hills, Kitchener, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in one day, 5 June 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first look to the finished lawn at dusk.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the front lawn between the hosta bed and the sidewalk at a two-storey home in Forest Hills, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Forest Hill sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A front lawn that had thinned to clover and weeds from the hosta bed out to the sidewalk, green from the street and patchy underfoot. The whole lawn needed replacing, not a corner.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the lawn at half past eleven on the morning of 5 June 2026.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded from the house to the sidewalk and around the hosta bed, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: By a quarter to three on 5 June the crew had stripped the old lawn to bare ground. Fresh topsoil was barrowed in through the afternoon and graded from the house to the sidewalk by a quarter past five.
The result: The rolls went down through the evening, fitted around the hosta bed and to the sidewalk and the driveway, and the lawn was laid by a quarter to seven.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Forest Hills Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: Clover and weeds move into a lawn wherever the grass has thinned, and this one had thinned right across the front.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Once the new turf knits, there is no open ground here for clover to take back.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: Tall maples across the street and beside the house throw moving shade over this lawn through the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. A front lawn this open gets that light across the middle from mid-morning on.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a front lawn thinned to clover and weeds from the hosta bed to the sidewalk. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the sidewalk and around the bed, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
Through the early afternoon of 5 June the crew stripped the old turf and raked the ground clean, leaving bare soil from the house to the sidewalk by a quarter to three. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the weeds and their roots leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Sidewalk
Fresh topsoil was barrowed in in heaps across the bare ground, then raked out and graded from the house to the sidewalk and around the hosta bed by a quarter past five, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old bumps and hollows.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Through the evening of 5 June the rolls went down from the house out to the sidewalk, each one fitted tight to the driveway, the hosta bed and the curb, and the lawn was laid by a quarter to seven.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The water was on the new lawn by dusk on 5 June. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
