Backyard Sod Installation In Highland West, Kitchener
A fenced back yard in Highland West, Kitchener, laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod on 28 May 2026, rolled in and edged with fresh mulch, and photographed by our crew on the day and again fifteen days on.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a fenced back yard under a mature maple behind a home in Highland West, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Highland West sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: The crew’s first frame on this job is the new sod already down and being rolled, so there is no photograph of the old yard. What they found was a back yard between a new board fence and a chain-link fence that needed a lawn from the deck to the far corner.
If this looks like your lawn: The frames pick up at the rolling on 28 May 2026 and finish with the lawn fifteen days on, 12 June. The tear-out and grading came before the camera did.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Fresh topsoil graded from the deck to the fences, farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole yard, and a mulched border along the fence lines.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: By half past twelve on 28 May the sod was down across the yard and the crew was rolling it firm to the topsoil, with the mulched border already in along the fences.
The result: Fifteen days on, 12 June, the lawn had knitted in and greened up under the maple, with the hose still out for the daily watering.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Highland West Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A back yard used every day wears in the same paths, from the deck to the gate and along the fence.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Rolled firm to the topsoil on day one, the turf here had knitted across the seams within the fortnight.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A mature maple in the corner throws dappled shade across this yard through the afternoon.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. The yard here gets full sun across the middle for most of the day, and the lawn had greened up evenly under the tree by 12 June.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a fenced back yard under a mature maple that needed a lawn from the deck to the far corner. The estimate covered fresh topsoil graded to the fences, farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole yard and a mulched border along the fence lines.
Clear the Old Ground
The old ground was cleared and barrowed off before the frames begin. Clearing it rather than burying it means the old roots and debris leave instead of sitting under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Fences
Fresh topsoil was graded from the deck out to the board fence and the chain-link fence, with a mulched border raked in along both, so the new sod would sit on an even bed with a clean edge.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Roll It In
The rolls went down across the yard on the morning of 28 May and were fitted to the deck and the mulch line, then rolled firm so every piece sat in full contact with the topsoil beneath it.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The lawn was watered in on 28 May and, as our 12 June frame shows, the hose was still out fifteen days on. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Four Frames From the Job
Four photographs taken by the crew on two visits, in the order they were taken: the new sod being rolled in across the yard at half past twelve on 28 May, two more angles of the rolling and the mulched border, and the Kentucky bluegrass lawn knitted in under the maple fifteen days on, 12 June.
