The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the front lawn under a mature maple at a stone-and-siding bungalow in Pioneer Tower West, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Pioneer Tower West sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A front lawn that had thinned and gone patchy under the maple, green from the road but sparse underfoot from the lamp post out to the driveway. The whole lawn needed replacing.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the lawn at one o’clock on 2 June 2026 with the sod cutter parked on the driveway.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded from the house down to the driveway and the road, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: Through the afternoon of 2 June the crew ran the sod cutter across the old lawn, hauled the turf onto the trailer and graded fresh topsoil from the house to the driveway.
The result: The rolls went down through the evening, fitted around the lamp post, the rock garden and the driveway, and the sprinkler was running on the new lawn by a quarter past eight.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Pioneer Tower West Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A front lawn on a corner takes feet from the driveway, the road and the walkway, and thin grass wears open along those lines.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Around the lamp post and the driveway here that self-repair is what keeps the seams closed.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A mature maple at the corner of the house throws moving shade across this lawn for much of the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. The lawn here gets that light across the front from mid-morning on, and it was the thin grass under the maple that told us the old turf had run out of vigour, not the light.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed at noon on 2 June: a front lawn thinned and patchy under the maple from the lamp post to the driveway. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the driveway, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
Through the afternoon of 2 June the crew ran the sod cutter across the old lawn and loaded the turf onto the trailer at the curb, which is where the frames pick up again that evening. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass and its thatch leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Driveway
Fresh topsoil was spread and graded from the house down to the driveway and the road and around the rock garden, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old bumps and hollows under the maple.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Through the evening the rolls went down from the house out to the road and were fitted tight to the driveway, the rock garden and the base of the lamp post.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The water was on the new lawn by a quarter past eight on the evening of 2 June, sprinkler first and then the hose. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
