Front Lawn Sod Replacement In Westmount, Kitchener
A thin, uneven front lawn at a newly finished white-brick home in Westmount, Kitchener, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over two days, 18 and 19 June 2026, and photographed by our crew from the sod cutter to the lawn three days on.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the front lawn either side of the stone steps at a white-brick home in Westmount, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A thin, uneven front lawn either side of new stone steps, with bare ground along the driveway edge where the old grass had given up. The lawn had come through the work on the house looking tired.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frames 1 and 2 in the gallery below show the sod cutter already on the old lawn on the afternoon of 18 June 2026.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded either side of the steps and out to the driveway and the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On the afternoon of 18 June the crew ran the sod cutter across the old lawn and barrowed the turf off. By half past ten on 19 June fresh topsoil was graded either side of the steps and around the maple.
The result: The rolls went down through 19 June, and by six that evening the lawn was laid to the steps and the driveway and the crew was washing the concrete down. Our 22 June frame shows it three days on.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Westmount Front Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A front lawn split by a set of steps has edges everywhere, and edges are where thin grass gives up first.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Along the steps and the driveway here that self-repair is what keeps the seams closed.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A mature maple in the front yard throws moving shade across this lawn for part of the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. The lawn here gets that light across the front for most of the day.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a thin, uneven front lawn either side of new stone steps, bare along the driveway edge. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the steps, the driveway and the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
On the afternoon of 18 June the crew ran a sod cutter across the old lawn and barrowed the turf off the property. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass and its thatch leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Either Side of the Steps
On the morning of 19 June fresh topsoil was spread and graded either side of the stone steps, around the maple and out to the driveway, so the new sod would sit on an even bed that meets the steps and the concrete cleanly.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Through 19 June the rolls went down either side of the steps and were fitted tight to the stone, the new garden beds and the driveway, and the crew hosed the concrete clean before leaving that evening.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The water was on the new lawn by the evening of 19 June. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Six Frames From the Job
Six photographs taken by the crew over two days and a return visit, in the order they were taken: the sod cutter on the old lawn on 18 June, the topsoil graded around the steps and the maple on the morning of 19 June, the new lawn laid and the driveway washed down that evening, and the Kentucky bluegrass lawn three days on, 22 June.
