Backyard Sod Installation In Westmount, Waterloo
A bare back yard between a new deck and a gazebo in Westmount, Waterloo, taken from packed ground to farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over two mornings, 29 and 30 May 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first look to the finished lawn.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a fenced back yard between a new deck and a gazebo behind a home in Westmount, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Westmount sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Bare, packed ground from the deck to the gazebo, the old lawn already gone and the surface trodden hard. There was no grass left to save.
If this looks like your lawn: A yard that comes to us as bare ground is a whole-lawn job: the ground loosened, fresh topsoil and sod, not a patch. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard on the afternoon of 29 May 2026.
📋

The Solution
The work: On the morning of 30 May the crew worked the packed ground over, barrowed in fresh topsoil in heaps across the yard and had it spread and graded by a quarter to ten.
The result: The rolls went down from the far fence back toward the deck, and the yard was laid, edged and being watered by eleven that morning.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Westmount Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Waterloo lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A yard between a deck and a gazebo is a walkway as much as a lawn, and packed ground stays packed.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Between the deck stairs and the gazebo here that self-repair is what keeps a worn path from opening up again.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: Tall trees along the fence lines throw dappled shade across this yard through the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. A yard this open gets that light down the middle from mid-morning on.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed on 29 May: bare, packed ground between the deck and the gazebo, the old lawn already gone. The estimate covered working the ground over, fresh topsoil graded across the whole yard and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the deck to the far fence.
Loosen the Packed Ground
There was no old lawn to cut out here: the yard came to us as bare ground. First thing on 30 May the crew worked the packed surface over so the topsoil would bond to it instead of sitting on a hard pan, and the frames pick up with the heaps of topsoil that followed.

Grade Fresh Topsoil From the Deck to the Gazebo
Fresh topsoil was barrowed in and spread across the yard through the morning of 30 May, then graded flush with the deck, the gazebo pad and the fence lines, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old ruts.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
By a quarter to eleven the rolls were going down from the gazebo end back toward the deck, each one fitted tight to the deck skirt, the pad and the fences.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The water was on the new lawn by eleven on the morning of 30 May. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
