Sod Installation In Plattsville, Ontario

A side yard and a fenced backyard at a red-brick bungalow in Plattsville, south-west of Kitchener, stripped and regraded on 5 and 6 August 2026, with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod laid across the backyard and back under the arbor on the second day.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region and beyond we have photographed: the side yard and the backyard of a red-brick bungalow in a newer subdivision in Plattsville, south-west of Kitchener, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first afternoon of the job to the finished lawn.

🍂

Before

What we saw: Worn, weedy grass through the side yard between the house and the neighbour, with a bare dirt path worn through to the backyard and compacted bare ground beside the concrete pad. It was the whole side yard that needed replacing, not a patch.

If this looks like your lawn: For this lot, the fix was a full strip and regrade rather than patching; the photos follow the side yard and the backyard. Frame 1 below shows the side yard on the afternoon of 5 August 2026.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: A full strip of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded through the side yard and across the backyard to the foundation and the fences, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod on the new grade.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On 5 August the crew started stripping the old turf: the backyard was bare by evening and the side yard by the next morning. By late morning on 6 August fresh topsoil was spread across the backyard and raked and graded through the side yard.

The result: By late afternoon on 6 August the side yard was sodded from the pad back under the arbor, and the backyard was laid from the house to the back fence, with a lawn roller and the hose out on it.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Plattsville Lawn

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our service areas page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Plattsville lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring. Laid on 6 August, this lawn had the rest of the growing season to root before the cold.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: The old side yard had a bare dirt path worn through it under the arbor to the backyard, the route between the front of the house and the back.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. In a side yard that is also the way to the backyard, that self-repair is what keeps a worn line from opening up again.

☀️

Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine

The challenge: The backyard is open from the house to the back fence, with one young tree and no canopy over it, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best with four to six or more hours of sun a day, and with daily watering for the first two weeks or so it roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the hose was already out on the new backyard on 6 August.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job

What we assessed: worn, weedy grass through the side yard, with a bare dirt path worn through to the backyard and compacted ground beside the concrete pad. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered stripping the old turf, fresh topsoil graded to the foundation and the fences, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Strip and Haul Away the Old Turf

On 5 August the crew started stripping the old turf: the street end of the side yard was bare by mid-afternoon, with a crew member bagging debris, and the backyard by evening. The skid steer loaded the turf into a dump trailer, so the weeds and their roots left the property instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Through the Side Yard and Backyard

By mid-morning on 6 August fresh topsoil was spread across the backyard and dumped in piles along the side yard, and by late morning the side yard was raked and graded through to the arbor, evenly to the foundation and the timber edge of the pad, so the new sod would sit on an even bed with clean edges.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

Our frames go from the graded soil to the finished lawn. The job needed the rolls fitted tight to the foundation and the timber edge of the pad, run on under the arbor and cut in around the young tree’s stone ring, and by late afternoon on 6 August the backyard and the side yard from the pad back under the arbor were laid.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

By the end of the day on 6 August a lawn roller and the hose were out on the new backyard. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Seven Frames From the Job

Seven photographs taken by the crew over two days, in the order they were taken: the worn side yard and the first ground stripped on the afternoon of 5 August, fresh topsoil spread and graded on the morning of 6 August, and by late afternoon the backyard and the side yard from the pad to the arbor laid with Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
