Our Sod Installation Guide
Step 1
1. Old Sod Removal
Using our sod cutter we remove 2’’ of old sod (included in price).
We do not rototill. Rototilling mixes the old weeds into the new soil creating a high chance of them coming back.
Step 2
2. Soil Installation
Supply and install up to 3’’ of screened topsoil. It is packed with the right stuff to keep your lawn looking its best!
Step 3
3. Sloping/Grading
Remove any lumps and bumps to ensure your new lawn is at and has the best grade for your yard.
Step 4
4. Fertilize
Apply turf starter fertilizer.
This will help promote initial root growth.
Step 5
5. Sod Installation
Supply and install 100% Kentucky Blue grass sod. Cut fresh from the sod farm the morning of installation. It is very important to install within the first 12 hours.
Step 6
6. Roll New Sod
Roll your lawn using our 400lb roller to both compress the sod to the soil and to remove any air pockets, smoothing out any bumps along the way.
Step 7
7. Watering Lawn
Water your lawn using the homeowners water. One time after installation. The first watering is the most important.
Step 8
8. Sod Warranty
We offer a 100% guarantee that your sod will grow and if any pieces die due to being unhealthy we will come back and replace it. Free of charge.
Sod Installation — Frequently Asked Questions
What homeowners ask before hiring a sod installer in the Waterloo Region.
What does a sod installer need to look at before quoting?
Your grade, your drainage, the condition of your soil, how easily a crew can get in and out, and how much repair the site needs. Some yards are simply sparse and uneven; others have no usable lawn base at all. The exact scope of your job depends on the condition of your property, and that early look is what sets it. An installer who quotes without looking is guessing at the part of the work that decides whether the lawn lasts past its first season, so expect the questions and be wary of a number that arrives without them.
When does a yard need a full new lawn installation rather than a repair?
Two situations come up most often. The first is a new build. After heavy equipment, material storage and the final trades have moved through, the yard is rarely ready for grass, and the work is about finishing the property, not just adding green space. That applies whether you are the builder or the homeowner taking possession. The second is a full yard reset. If your lawn has been heavily damaged by grubs, drainage problems, neglect or repeated patch repairs, replacement can make more sense than rescue. At some point, piecemeal fixes cost you more in time and frustration than starting over with proper preparation and fresh sod.
Can good quality sod make up for poor soil prep?
No. The biggest mistake is treating sod like a cosmetic product. Premium sod makes a difference, but it cannot overcome a poor base forever. Proper grading moves water away from the home and stops low spots turning into muddy problem areas. If the soil under your sod is compacted, too thin, poorly graded or full of construction waste, the roots have a harder time anchoring and reaching moisture, and heavy rain and summer heat in Ontario add stress on top of that. A quick, low-price installation that skips grading corrections may look attractive up front, but you often pay later in repairs, topdressing, drainage fixes or replacement.
What should a sod installation quote cover?
You are probably not after the cheapest lawn possible; like most people, you want clear pricing and honest recommendations. There is no universal price, so a proper estimate reflects your site conditions and prep requirements, not just the square footage. A flat, clean lot with easy access is a different job from a yard that needs drainage correction or imported soil, and the labour behind the prep counts as much as the area does. A good estimate explains what is included, where any added cost comes from, and which corners are not worth cutting.
Should I hire a sod specialist or a general landscaper?
A general contractor may list sod as one service among many. A dedicated specialist is more dialled in on grading tolerances, soil depth, seam tightness, watering requirements and installing efficiently without compromising quality, which matters to you when timelines are tight or conditions are less than ideal. A specialist is also more likely to spot the warning signs behind early lawn failure: drainage fall issues and poor soil structure. Specialists tend to be direct about what your property needs instead of overselling work that will not help, so you get clearer expectations and fewer surprises once the job starts.
Does the weather affect sod installation?
Yes, and so does soil moisture. Very wet conditions can make grading messy and leave soft spots behind. Hot, dry stretches call for tighter watering discipline once the sod is down. Shaded yards, sloped areas and high-traffic commercial sites may also need a slightly different approach than a flat suburban lot, so the plan should reflect what your yard is actually like. A dependable installer does not get there by ignoring the conditions that affect the result; fast service is only worth having if your lawn roots in and performs as expected afterward.
