Side Yard and Backyard Sod Installation In Galt, Cambridge
A side yard strip and a fenced back yard behind a home in Galt, Cambridge, laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod at the end of May 2026 and photographed by our crew with the strip graded on 30 May and the whole lawn knitted in a week later.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a paved side yard with a narrow strip beside the fence and a fenced back yard beside the pool at a home in Galt, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Galt sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A narrow strip of bare soil beside the fence along the paved side yard, and a back yard beside the pool that needed a lawn from the patio to the fences. The crew’s first frame is the side strip already graded.
If this looks like your lawn: Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the side strip graded and ready on the morning of 30 May 2026. The back yard was laid the same week and the frames pick it up knitted in on 6 June.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Fresh topsoil graded along the side strip and across the back yard to the pool fence and the patio, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod on both.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: By ten on 30 May the side strip beside the fence was graded with fresh topsoil and boxed in against the pavers, ready for sod.
The result: A week on, 6 June, the back yard and the side strip were laid and knitting in, the edges fitted to the patio, the pool fence and the flagstone path, with the hose still out.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Galt Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Cambridge sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Cambridge lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A strip beside a fence and a lawn beside a pool both take feet on the same line every day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Along the flagstone path here that self-repair is what keeps the edge from wearing open.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A spruce in the corner and the trees over the fence throw dappled shade across part of this yard.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. The back yard here gets full sun across the middle, and the corner under the spruce had greened up evenly by 6 June.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a bare strip beside the fence along the paved side yard and a back yard beside the pool that needed a lawn to the fences. The estimate covered fresh topsoil graded on both, boxed in against the pavers, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Clear the Old Ground
The old ground along the strip and across the back yard was cleared and barrowed off before the frames begin. Clearing it rather than burying it means the old roots and debris leave instead of sitting under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Along the Strip and Across the Yard
Fresh topsoil was graded along the side strip flush with the pavers and the timber edge, as frame 1 shows on 30 May, and across the back yard to the patio and the pool fence, so the new sod would sit on an even bed with a clean edge against the stone.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The rolls went down along the strip and across the back yard and were fitted tight to the flagstone path, the patio and the pool fence, with the corner under the spruce cut in around the shrubs.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The lawn was watered in on the day and, as our 6 June frames show, the hose was still out a week on. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Four Frames From the Job
Four photographs taken by the crew on two visits, in the order they were taken: the side strip graded beside the fence on the morning of 30 May, and the back yard, the corner under the spruce and the side strip laid with Kentucky bluegrass sod and knitting in a week later, 6 June.
