Sod Installation On Carrington Place, Waterloo
A large, tree-lined back yard behind a two-storey home on Carrington Place, Waterloo, cleared, topsoiled and laid with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across three visits between 26 August and 1 September 2026, and photographed by our crew at every stage.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a large back yard under tall trees behind a two-storey home on Carrington Place, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Bare, patchy ground across a big back yard under tall trees, with the old surface scraped thin, a few clumps of grass left and the skid steer already on site. The yard ran from the walkway and patio by the house right back to the tree line.
If this looks like your lawn: A yard this size under trees is a grading job first. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard on the evening of 26 August 2026, and frame 2 the cleared ground on 29 August.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: Clearing and rough-grading the whole yard by machine, a delivery of fresh topsoil spread and graded along the walkway and across to the trees, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod from the patio to the tree line.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On 26 August the skid steer was on site clearing the old surface, and by 29 August the yard was cleared and rough-graded to the trees.
The result: On 1 September fresh topsoil was spread in the early afternoon and graded along the walkway, and by eight that evening the new sod was down across the whole yard to the patio and the deck stairs.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Carrington Place Yard
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Waterloo lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: Tall trees line this yard on two sides and throw moving shade across it for most of the day.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. A yard this open in the middle gets that light even with trees around it.
☀️
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A lawn laid over a whole back yard has a lot of seams, and every one is a place for the turf to dry out before it roots.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. On a yard this size that self-repair is what turns an evening’s rolls into one lawn.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a big back yard under tall trees with the old surface scraped thin and bare, running from the patio to the tree line. The estimate covered machine clearing and grading, a load of fresh topsoil, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole yard.
Clear the Old Surface by Machine
On 26 August the skid steer cleared what was left of the old surface across the yard, and by 29 August the ground was cleared and rough-graded from the walkway back to the trees. On a yard this size the machine does the clearing that a sod cutter would do on a front lawn.

Deliver and Grade Fresh Topsoil
On the early afternoon of 1 September fresh topsoil was tipped in piles across the yard, spread out and graded along the walkway and across to the trees, dark and fine enough to take in a handful, so the sod would sit on a deep, even bed.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Through the late afternoon and evening of 1 September the rolls went down across the yard, from the tree line in to the patio, and were fitted tight to the walkway, the patio edge and the deck stairs.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The lawn was down by eight on the evening of 1 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
