Sod Installation In Grand River South, Kitchener

A worn back yard behind a two-storey home in Grand River South, Kitchener, looked at on 5 September 2026 and replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in one day on 8 September, photographed by our crew from the first look to the finished lawn.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a fenced back yard with stepping stones under the deck stairs at a two-storey home in Grand River South, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Grand River South sod installation page.

🍂

Before

What we saw: Patchy, worn grass across a small fenced back yard, thin along the fence and bare around the stepping stones under the deck stairs. The shrubs along the fence were fine; the lawn between them had given up.

If this looks like your lawn: For this yard, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the yard on our first visit on 5 September 2026, and frame 2 the morning the crew arrived on 8 September.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded under the deck stairs and along the fence, the stepping stones re-set into the new lawn, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole back yard.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On 8 September the crew brought the sod cutter round the side of the house before noon, cut out the old turf and had the yard graded by mid-afternoon.

The result: By early evening on 8 September the rolls were down along the side of the house with the stepping stones re-set into them, and the back yard was laid wall to fence.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Grand River South Yard

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: A small yard takes the same foot traffic on the same path every day, which is how the ground around these stepping stones went bare.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Around stepping stones that self-repair is what keeps the edges from opening up again.

☀️

Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine

The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.

Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, and a fenced yard with a deck above it holds moisture better than an open front lawn, which helps those first weeks.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Patchy, worn back yard lawn with stepping stones under the deck stairs at a Grand River South, Kitchener home before sod

Assess the Yard and Quote the Job

What we assessed on 5 September: patchy, worn grass across the fenced back yard, bare around the stepping stones under the deck stairs. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded to the fence, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf

On the morning of 8 September the sod cutter came round the side of the house and the old turf was cut out across the yard and barrowed away. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass and its thatch leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Under the Stairs and Along the Fence

By mid-afternoon on 8 September fresh topsoil had been raked and graded across the yard, level under the deck stairs and out to the fence and the shrubs, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old hollows.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

The rolls went down late in the afternoon of 8 September, along the side of the house first with the stepping stones re-set into the new turf, then across the back yard tight to the fence and the shrub beds.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

The lawn was down by early evening on 8 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Seven Frames From the Job

Seven photographs taken by the crew, in the order they were taken: the worn yard on our first visit on 5 September, then the sod cutter, the stripped and graded ground, and the new Kentucky bluegrass sod laid with the stepping stones re-set, all on 8 September.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
