Sod Installation In Hespeler, Cambridge

A worn, fenced front lawn in Hespeler, Cambridge, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over two days, 16 and 17 July 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first look at the old lawn on 8 July to the first watering.

The Job at a Glance

This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a fenced front lawn at a brick home with a white-trimmed porch in Hespeler, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Hespeler sod installation page.

🍂

Before

What we saw: Straw-coloured, dried-out grass across most of the front lawn, broken up by weeds, thin green tufts and bare ground between the brick walkway and the iron fence. The grass had dried out and thinned, and much of what was still green was weeds.

If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the lawn when we first looked at it on 8 July 2026, and frames 2 and 3 show it on the morning of 16 July, when the crew arrived.

📋

The Quote

The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded across the whole lawn and out to the fence line, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod fitted to the iron fence on both street sides.

Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

🌱

The Solution

The work: On 16 July the crew cut out the old turf with a sod cutter and barrowed it off the lawn; by the time the first rolls went down on the morning of 17 July, fresh topsoil had been raked and graded across the whole lawn.

The result: On the morning of 17 July the first rolls went down at the porch end and along the iron fence, then across the rest of the lawn. The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by early afternoon.

Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Hespeler Lawn

Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Cambridge sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.

❄️

Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters

The challenge: Cambridge lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring, and a lawn open to the street on two sides like this one gets no shelter from it.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.

🌿

Knits Together and Self-Repairs

The challenge: The old lawn had broken into a patchwork of dead, straw-coloured grass, weeds and bare ground, and bare ground stays bare until something fills it.

Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. This lawn was cut to fit an iron fence on two sides and a brick walkway on the third, and a grass that closes its own seams is the right one for all those edges.

☀️

Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine

The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.

Why bluegrass: This lawn is open to the sky on the street sides, with a mature maple over the porch end. With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinkler was already running when the crew photographed the finished lawn.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job

What we assessed on 8 July: straw-coloured, dried-out grass across most of the fenced front lawn, with weeds and bare ground between the brick walkway and the iron fence. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded across the whole lawn, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.

Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf

On the morning of 16 July the crew ran a sod cutter across the old lawn and barrowed the old turf off the property. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass, the weeds and their thatch leave with it instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Across the Whole Lawn

Fresh topsoil was raked and graded across the whole lawn and out to the fence line on both street sides, so the new sod would sit on an even, firm bed instead of following the old bumps and hollows. The frame beside this step shows the graded lawn on the morning of 17 July, with the first rolls already down at the porch end and more waiting in the wheelbarrow.

Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges

On the morning of 17 July the first rolls went down at the porch end and along the iron fence, then across the rest of the lawn, with a wheelbarrow of rolls following the crew. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn, and the fence line here was fitted roll by roll.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions

The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by early afternoon on 17 July. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.

Start To Finish: Ten Frames From the Job

Ten photographs taken by the crew, in the order they were taken: the worn lawn when we first looked at it on 8 July, the same lawn on the morning of 16 July and the old turf coming out that day, then the graded topsoil, the new Kentucky bluegrass sod going down and the first watering on 17 July.

Even though Evan was not able to complete my landscape project as planned(due to unforeseen circumstances), he’s gone above and beyond to make it right by crediting me out of pocket towards the cost of the project so I can still get it done on my own timeline through another provider. I really appreciate his professionalism and support. Hope to access his services sometime in the future!
