Sod Installation On Woodbend Crescent, Waterloo
A worn front lawn, boulevard and backyard on Woodbend Crescent, Waterloo, photographed by our crew on 8 September 2026, torn out over 10 and 11 September and covered in farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod by the evening of 11 September.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the front lawn, boulevard and backyard at a two-storey home on Woodbend Crescent, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Thin, dried-out grass across the front lawn with a bare, thatchy strip along the sidewalk, and the same worn grass on the boulevard between the sidewalk and the road. In the backyard the lawn under the big maple had thinned to bare soil and leaf litter.
If this looks like your lawn: For this property the fix was a full tear-out of all three areas rather than patching. Frames 1 to 3 in the gallery below show the lawn on 8 September 2026, and frame 4 the front on the afternoon of 10 September, before the turf came out.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf on the front lawn, the boulevard, the side strip between the driveways and the backyard, fresh topsoil graded flush to the sidewalk, the driveway and the stone bed edging, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across all of it.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On the afternoon of 10 September the old turf started coming out: the backyard was stripped and barrowed out, and the dump trailer at the curb was loaded with the old lawn. By late morning on 11 September the front lawn and the side strip had been stripped and graded with fresh topsoil, and the backyard and the boulevard were raked out through the early afternoon.
The result: By the evening of 11 September the new Kentucky bluegrass sod was down across the backyard around the maple and across the front lawn around both stone beds, with a sprinkler running on the front lawn in the last frame.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Woodbend Crescent Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Waterloo sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Waterloo Winters
The challenge: This sod went down on 11 September, so its first Waterloo winter arrives within a few months. Lawns here sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, and laid in September it has the cool weeks of fall to root before the ground freezes, then greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: The old lawn had thinned to bare ground along the sidewalk, on the boulevard and under the maple, and bare ground stays bare until something fills it. This property also has more edges than most: two stone-edged beds, the stone ring around the maple, the sidewalk, the driveway and the strip between two driveways.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. A grass that closes its own gaps is the right one for a lawn cut into this many pieces.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: The front lawn, the side strip and the boulevard sit in open sun, as the midday frames from 11 September show, and new sod in full sun dries out fast if it is not watered. Rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and with daily watering for the first two weeks or so it roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why a sprinkler was already running on the front lawn in the last frame from 11 September.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What the crew photographed on 8 September: thin, dried-out grass across the front lawn with a bare strip along the sidewalk, the same on the boulevard by the road, and a patchy lawn thinned to bare soil under the maple in the backyard. Rather than patch three areas, the estimate covered a full tear-out of all of them, fresh topsoil graded to the hardscape and bed edging, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
On the afternoon of 10 September the old turf started coming out. Frame 5 shows the backyard stripped and the cut turf being barrowed out past the shed, and frame 6 the dump trailer at the curb loaded with the old lawn. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the tired grass and its thatch leave the property instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Sidewalk, Driveway and Beds
By late morning on 11 September fresh topsoil had been spread across the front lawn and graded flush with the sidewalk and driveway and up to the stone edging of both beds, and along the side strip between the two driveways. The backyard was raked level around the maple by early afternoon and the boulevard strip was topsoiled from wheelbarrows after that, so every area would sit level with the hardscape instead of proud of it or sunk below it.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The crew did not stop to photograph the rolls going down, so the frames pick up on the evening of 11 September with the sod already laid: across the backyard and fitted around the stone ring at the maple, and across the front lawn around both stone beds and to the sidewalk and driveway. Tight seams and edges are what let the rolls knit into one lawn.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
A sprinkler was already running on the front lawn when the last frame was taken on the evening of 11 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
