Front Lawn Sod Replacement In Forest Heights, Kitchener
A thin front lawn under a magnolia in Forest Heights, Kitchener, cut out and replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in one day, 12 September 2026, and photographed by our crew from the sod cutter to the sprinkler.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: a front lawn under a magnolia with a flower bed at a home in Forest Heights, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Forest Heights sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Thin, tired grass across a front lawn that slopes from the house down to the sidewalk, worn along the driveway edge and under the spreading magnolia with its bed of black-eyed Susans. The lawn had thinned everywhere rather than died in one spot.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out rather than patching. Frames 1 and 2 in the gallery below show the lawn on the morning of 12 September 2026, marked out and with the sod cutter on site.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old turf rather than patching, the ground graded around the magnolia and its flower bed and down to the sidewalk and driveway, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the whole front lawn.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On the morning of 12 September the crew cut out the old turf around the magnolia and loaded it onto the dump trailer by early afternoon.
The result: By late afternoon on 12 September the new sod was down around the tree and the flower bed, fitted to the driveway and the sidewalk, with the sprinkler running by half past four.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Forest Heights Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: A spreading magnolia shades the middle of this lawn for part of every day, and the thin old grass had given up beneath it.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. A south-facing slope like this one gets that light around the tree.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the sprinkler was running on this lawn before the crew left on 12 September.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed: thin, worn grass across a sloping front lawn, bare along the driveway edge and under the magnolia. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, grading around the tree and its bed, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
On the morning of 12 September the crew ran the sod cutter across the lawn and around the magnolia, and by early afternoon the old turf was loaded onto the dump trailer and off the property, thatch and all.

Grade the Ground Around the Magnolia
With the turf off, the ground was raked and graded around the trunk and the flower bed and down the slope to the sidewalk and driveway edge. The frames jump from the stripping to the finished lawn; the grading happened between them in the early afternoon.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The rolls went down across the slope in the afternoon of 12 September, cut in around the magnolia and its bed of black-eyed Susans and fitted tight to the driveway and the sidewalk.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The sprinkler was running on the new lawn by half past four on 12 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
