Front Lawn Sod Replacement In Grand River South, Kitchener
A thin strip of front lawn beside the walkway of a brick home in Grand River South, Kitchener, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod in a single morning, 8 September 2026, and photographed by our crew from the first cut to the finished lawn.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the narrow front lawn between the walkway and the driveway at a two-storey brick home in Grand River South, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the first watering. The service itself is described on our Grand River South sod installation page.
🍂
Before
What we saw: A narrow front lawn between the walkway and the driveway that had thinned to weeds and bare edges along the sidewalk. Small as it was, the whole strip needed replacing.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was a full tear-out and regrade rather than patching. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows the crew already cutting the old strip at half past seven on 8 September 2026.
📋
The Quote
The estimate covered: A full tear-out of the old strip rather than patching, fresh topsoil graded between the walkway and the driveway and level with the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across it.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: At half past seven on 8 September the crew cut the old strip along the sidewalk and barrowed the turf off. By a quarter past eight fresh topsoil was raked and graded across it.
The result: The rolls went down through the morning, fitted to the walkway, the driveway and the sidewalk, and the lawn was laid and watered by half past eleven.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Grand River South Front Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our Kitchener sod installation page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: Kitchener lawns sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A narrow lawn between a walkway and a driveway is all edges, and thin grass gives up at the edges first.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Along the walkway and the sidewalk here that self-repair is what keeps the seams closed.
☀️
Thrives on Sun and a Simple Routine
The challenge: Kentucky bluegrass wants four to six or more hours of sun a day, and new sod is only as good as its first weeks: rolls that dry out before they root stay loose on the soil.
Why bluegrass: With daily watering for the first two weeks or so, Kentucky bluegrass sod roots into the topsoil in two to three weeks, which is why the hose was on this strip before the crew left on 8 September.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed: a narrow front lawn thinned to weeds and bare edges between the walkway and the driveway. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered a full tear-out, fresh topsoil graded level with the sidewalk, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod across the strip.
Cut Out and Haul Away the Old Turf
At half past seven on 8 September the crew cut the old strip along the sidewalk edge and barrowed the turf out to the trailer. Stripping it rather than tilling it in means the weeds and their roots leave instead of being buried under the new sod.

Grade Fresh Topsoil Between the Walkway and the Driveway
By a quarter past eight fresh topsoil was spread and raked level between the walkway and the driveway, flush with the sidewalk, so the new sod would sit on an even bed instead of the old dips along the edges.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
Through the morning the rolls went down and were fitted tight to the walkway slabs, the driveway and the sidewalk, with the seams staggered so a narrow lawn reads as one piece of turf.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
The water was on the new lawn by half past eleven on 8 September. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the homeowner got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
