Sod Replacement In Wellesley Township, Ontario
A thin, worn lawn around a tree and a picnic table beside a brick building in Wellesley Township, replaced with farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over 2 and 3 June 2026 and photographed by our crew from the morning the work began to the finished lawn.
The Job at a Glance
This is one of the landscaping projects across Waterloo Region we have photographed: the worn band of lawn either side of a long concrete walkway beside a two-storey brick building in Wellesley Township, replaced by our crew and photographed from the first morning of the job to the finished lawn.
🍂
Before
What we saw: Bare, dry dirt under the big tree and in front of the picnic-table pad, with thin, patchy grass between them and the long concrete walkway. The lawn further out was still green, but this band beside the walkway had worn thin and gone to bare dirt under the tree.
If this looks like your lawn: For this lawn, the fix was fresh topsoil and new sod across the whole band rather than patching the bare spots. Frame 1 in the gallery below shows it on the morning of 2 June 2026, before any work had started.

The Quote
The estimate covered: Scraping up the thin old lawn on both sides of the long walkway, fresh topsoil graded around the tree, up to the picnic-table pad and to the edge of the concrete, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod over it.
Also included: Watering-in guidance for the first weeks and our 100% sod warranty: any piece that arrives unhealthy is replaced free of charge. Estimate requests get a reply within 24 hours.

The Solution
The work: On the morning of 2 June the crew scraped up the thin old lawn beside the walkway, and by late morning fresh topsoil was spread and raked level around the tree, up to the picnic-table pad and along the strip beside the building.
The result: By early afternoon on 3 June new Kentucky bluegrass sod ran along both sides of the walkway, cut in around the tree trunk and the picnic-table pad, with the hose out on the new lawn.
Why Kentucky Bluegrass Was the Right Sod for This Wellesley Township Lawn
Right On Sod installs 100% farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass, the same turf described on our service areas page. Three reasons it suits a lawn like this one.
❄️
Cold-Hardy for Ontario Winters
The challenge: This lawn went down at the start of June, and lawns in Wellesley Township sit frozen for months and go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every spring.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass that is cold-hardy, so it comes through Ontario winters and greens up again in spring. Laid in early June, this sod had the whole summer to root before its first winter.
🌿
Knits Together and Self-Repairs
The challenge: A picnic table on a lawn brings feet across the same patch of grass, and the ground in front of this one had thinned to bare dirt.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes, so the rolls knit together at the seams and the turf fills small gaps on its own. Around the picnic-table pad and along the walkway here, that self-repair helps small worn spots close over instead of opening into bare ground again.
☀️
Handles Dappled Shade Under Trees
The challenge: Mature trees spread a full canopy over this lawn and the walkway, so the ground under them gets broken, moving light rather than open sun.
Why bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass does best in sun but tolerates the broken, moving shade of a deciduous canopy as long as it gets four or more hours of light a day. Every frame of this job, from morning into early afternoon, shows sun reaching the lawn in patches through the leaves.

How We Replaced This Lawn, Step by Step

Assess the Lawn and Quote the Job
What we assessed: bare, dry dirt under the big tree and in front of the picnic-table pad, and thin grass between them and the walkway. Rather than patch it, the estimate covered scraping up the old lawn, fresh topsoil graded to the walkway, and farm-fresh Kentucky bluegrass sod.
Scrape Up the Old Lawn
Within half an hour of the first frame on 2 June the crew was at work with wheelbarrows and long-handled tools: the lawn left of the walkway was gouged where the scraping had begun, and the far end of the strip beside the building was already down to soil. Scraping up the thin old grass first means the fresh topsoil goes down on open ground instead of on a mat of worn turf.

Grade Fresh Topsoil to the Walkway
By late morning on 2 June fresh topsoil covered both sides of the walkway, raked level around the tree, up to the picnic-table pad and along the strip beside the building, with one of the crew still grading by the building wall. An even bed graded to the edge of the concrete is what lets the new sod sit flush with the walkway.
Lay the Kentucky Bluegrass Sod and Fit the Edges
The frames go from the graded soil on 2 June to the finished lawn on 3 June. The job needed the rolls cut in tight around the tree trunk and the picnic-table pad, run straight along both edges of the walkway and butted against the old lawn at the outer edge, and the finished frames show the darker new sod tight to each of those edges.

Water In and Hand Over Care Instructions
By early afternoon on 3 June the hose was out on the new sod. New sod needs daily watering for the first two weeks or so and roots in two to three weeks, and the client got watering-in guidance to see it through. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty.
