Sod Prices in Kitchener-Waterloo: Per Roll, Per Pallet and Installed
What sod costs by the roll, the pallet and the bulk bag around Kitchener-Waterloo, how delivery works, and what a finished lawn costs instead. We install sod; we do not sell rolls.
How much does sod cost in Kitchener-Waterloo?
Sod prices here, as posted when we checked in September 2026: one Kitchener supplier charges $0.96 a square foot delivered on orders under 667 square feet and $0.75 on 667 to 1,332, about $8.64 and $6.75 for its 9 square foot rolls, and Home Depot delivers bulk bags of 500 to 1,250 square feet for $499 to $946. Right On Sod does not sell sod by the roll or the pallet, or deliver it without installing it. We supply and install, and a finished lawn typically runs between $1.65 and $3.50 per square foot with the tear-out, topsoil, grading, sod and delivery all included.
Sod for Sale Around Kitchener-Waterloo: 3 Things to Check Before You Buy
Sellers here price sod three ways: by the roll, by the square foot and by the pallet (some say skid) or bulk bag. The number moves with roll size, order size and delivery, and it never includes the ground the sod has to go on.
📏
Roll Size and Order Size
The Problem: Rolls are not a standard unit. Sod around here comes in 9 and 10 square foot rolls, so a cheaper roll can simply be a smaller one. Order size matters too: one Kitchener supplier’s delivered price drops from $0.96 a square foot on small orders to $0.52 on very large ones.
The Fix: Compare prices per square foot, not per roll, and order by measured area. Our sod calculator turns your measurements and a waste allowance into square footage and a roll count.
🚚
Delivery, Pickup and Timing
The Problem: Most sellers around Kitchener-Waterloo that post prices include delivery, but some add a flat fee, and one Cambridge supplier sets its fee when you order and adds $50 on Saturdays. Pickup, where a seller offers it, hands you the hauling: a 10 square foot roll weighs 30 to 50 pounds and a full pallet well over a ton.
The Fix: Ask whether the price is delivered or pickup, where the pallet will be dropped, and how much notice the seller needs; the sellers we checked ask for 24 to 48 hours. Book delivery for the day you can lay it.
🧾
What the Roll Price Leaves Out
The Problem: The roll price is the turf and nothing else. Stripping the old lawn, getting rid of it, topsoil, grading, rented tools and a day of labour are all extra, and Region of Waterloo curbside yard waste will not take sod or soil.
The Fix: Price the whole job before you compare. The cost table below adds up each piece for a 1,000 square foot lawn using prices posted around Kitchener-Waterloo in September 2026.

How Sod Delivery Works When We Install It

Arranged for You, No Delivery Surcharge
You do not order, receive or unload anything, and nothing is left on your driveway for you to lay. We book the sod for your install day, and bringing it to your yard is part of the square-foot price we quote, so no separate delivery charge appears later.
Cut the Morning It Is Laid
Our Kentucky Bluegrass is cut at the farm the morning we lay it, so the pallets that arrive on install day are laid within hours, not left standing overnight. That matters: one Ontario sod farm puts the inside of a stacked pallet at 15 to 20 degrees Celsius above the air around it, and the Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario says delivered sod should be laid within 24 hours.

Laid on Ground We Have Prepared
The rolls go down on ground we have already stripped, topsoiled and graded, with staggered seams and rolled edges, and you get a watering plan for your yard before we leave. Most residential lawns are finished in a single day.
Sod Price Per Roll vs. Per Square Foot Installed
What does a roll cost next to a finished lawn? At one Kitchener supplier’s delivered prices, a 9 square foot roll comes to about $6.75 to $8.64 on a typical lawn-sized order, which is $0.75 to $0.96 a square foot for the turf alone, with nothing under it. The installed range below also pays for the tear-out, disposal, topsoil, grading and laying, and what moves a yard within it is on our sod installation cost page.
Comparing Sod Prices the Same Way:
📏
Per Roll: Divide the price by the roll’s size, 9 or 10 square feet, before you compare two sellers.
📦
Per Pallet: A pallet covers 700 to 720 square feet and weighs well over a ton, so ask where it will be dropped.
🏡
Per Square Foot Installed: The installed figure already carries the tear-out, topsoil, grading and delivery that a roll price leaves out.

On an easy, open yard that needs only light levelling, the money gap can be smaller than it looks once everything is counted. As a yard gets harder, with more tear-out, more imported soil or a single narrow gate, our installed price rises, but so do the topsoil, disposal and hours on the do-it-yourself side, and the grading takes skill as well as time.
We supply and install; we do not sell sod by the roll or deliver it on its own. Our guide to professional sodding versus DIY sets out when doing it yourself works, and our sod installation cost page breaks down the installed price.
One Job, Start to Finish
What You Get When We Do the Whole Job
A Waterloo job from August 2026: a newly built home with no lawn at all. Our crew cleared the rough ground and graded fresh topsoil on the first day, the sod arrived on pallets early the next morning, and the front and back lawns were laid by that evening. Every photo is on the project page, and more finished lawns are in our projects.

Where We Supply and Install Sod
Our crews supply and install sod across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph and nearby townships, with no travel charge inside that area. Every town we cover, and how booking works, is on our sod installation near me page.

Sod Prices and Delivery: Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask most when they are pricing sod by the roll, by the pallet or installed.
How much is a roll of sod in Kitchener-Waterloo?
One Kitchener supplier’s delivered price, as posted in September 2026, works out to about $8.64 for a 9 square foot roll on small orders and $6.75 on orders of 667 to 1,332 square feet. An Ontario cost guide puts sod alone at about $3.50 to $8.00 per 10 square foot roll before delivery. Check the roll size before comparing: some rolls cover 9 square feet, some 10.
How much is a pallet of sod?
A pallet usually holds 700 to 720 square feet: 70 rolls of 10 square feet, or 80 rolls of 9. By our arithmetic, 700 square feet comes to about $525 delivered at one Kitchener supplier’s rate for 667 to 1,332 square feet, and Home Depot’s 750 square foot bulk bag is $678 delivered. A full pallet weighs well over a ton, so it has to be dropped close to where it will be laid.
Does Right On Sod sell sod rolls or offer sod delivery on its own?
No. We supply and install, so the sod we arrange for your job is laid by our own crew on ground we have prepared. Sod for sale by the roll or the pallet comes from sod farms and landscape suppliers around Kitchener-Waterloo, and Home Depot delivers bulk bags of 500 to 1,250 square feet. We are glad to quote the installed job alongside so you can compare.
Can I just lay sod over dirt?
Not onto packed dirt. The ground needs loosening and a layer of topsoil: where the soil is poor or compacted, one Ontario sod farm advises adding 2 to 3 inches, and the Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario calls for 3 to 4. Any old lawn has to come out first; our guide to laying sod over grass explains why.
How soon does delivered sod have to be laid?
On the day it arrives if you can, and no later than 24 hours after delivery, which is the guidance from the Nursery Sod Growers Association of Ontario. A stacked pallet heats up inside, so in summer growers ask you to start laying within 6 hours. For the time of year, see our guide on when to install sod.
Is it cheaper to buy sod and lay it myself?
In cash, usually, though by less than most people expect. For a straightforward 1,000 square foot lawn, the rolls, a sod cutter, topsoil, a roller and a bin for the old turf come to about $1,570 to $1,760 before tax at September 2026 prices, against $1,650 to $3,500 installed. The do-it-yourself figure does not count a full day’s work for two people, grading included.
What do I need besides the sod to lay it myself?
A way to strip the old lawn (a sod cutter rents for $119 to $139 a day in Kitchener), somewhere to take it, topsoil to level the ground and fill low spots, a rake, a lawn roller at about $30 a day, and a hose or sprinkler ready the moment the first rolls go down.
Can the old sod go out with the yard waste?
Not in Waterloo Region: curbside yard waste does not take sod or soil. The Region’s drop-off sites in Waterloo and Cambridge charge by weight, $120 a tonne for soil and similar material with a $15 minimum per load, but the Region does not list sod by name, so call ahead to confirm how it is charged. A bin that accepts soil is another route.
How much sod should I order?
Measure each area, add them together and allow a little extra for cuts and curves. Our sod calculator does the arithmetic and gives you a roll count.
Do you offer a warranty on new sod?
Yes. Every install carries our 100% sod warranty: if a piece dies because it came in unhealthy, we come back and replace it free of charge. The warranty covers turf that arrives unhealthy, not sod lost to missed watering, extreme weather or pet damage after installation.
